Policy

PPC believes that good policy reflects the needs of the people. Children with CMCD depend on adults to make good decisions for their health care, education, growth and development, physical activity, nutrition, and social well-being. Poor health interferes with the ability of these children to succeed in other life areas. Children with CMCD also depend on adults to keep their needs and interests at the forefront when making policy decisions. Unable to vote, they lack a voice. PPC strives to give children with CMCD a voice and a face. We implore all adults to recognize the need to focus on Quality Health Care for our 10 million children with CMCD.

What about young adults with CMCD? Yes, they can vote, but they still lack a voice. So little is known about young adults with CMCD and in turn, these young adults know little about how to get good care and insurance coverage, stay in school/college, keep a job, and become happy and successful. Still developing, young adults with CMCD need guidance to navigate the complexities associated with having a health condition or disability. PPC advocates for policies that will enable young adults with CMCD to successfully transition to adult health care and independent management of their health. Only then, will these young adults become successful and have the chance to participate in and contribute to society.

Coalition for Young Adults with CMCD

One of PPC’s core principles is to work together with other groups and people invested in Quality Health Care for our young people. Our work in health care transition revealed widespread concern among families, pediatricians, and disease-based advocacy groups. In June 2009, PPC convened the first meeting of the Coalition for Young Adults Living with Chronic Medical Conditions and Disabilities (CMCD). Some of the coalition members provided input for the white paper. If you care about children and young adults with CMCD, raise the power of our voice and join our coalition.
